Ten-Story Stone Pagoda of Wongaksa Temple Site, Seoul

Wongaksa Pagoda, one of the National Treasure in South Korea

Wongaksa Pagoda is a twelve metre high ten-storey marble pagoda in South Korea, once on the grounds of the Gyeongbokgung palace but now held at Seoul's Tapgol (Pagoda) Park (탑골 공원) in a protective glass case. The Korean name literally means "ten storeyed stone pagoda of Wongaksa Temple site."

The pagoda is considered by art historians to be one of the finest examples of Joseon dynasty pagoda art. It was originally on the grounds of the now-lost Wongaksa Temple and is the only surviving stone pagoda of the Joseon period. The pagoda was designated as the second national treasure of Korea on December 12, 1962. From an inscription on the upper part of the pagoda it is known that the pagoda was built in 1467, the thirteenth year of King Sejo's reign.

It is one of the few pagodas made from marble in Korea. Typical Korean pagodas are made from granite, a material abundant on the peninsula. The pedestal supporting the pagoda is three-tiered, and its shape seen from the top looks like a Chinese character, 亞. The first three storeys of the pagoda follow the shape of the base and the next seven storeys are shaped in form of squares. Dragons, lions, lotus flowers, phoenixes, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the Four Heavenly Kings carved on each storey of the pagoda. The pagoda, while made of stone, is carved to look like it was made from wood. The pagoda has brackets, pillars, and curved roof shapes that imitate a wooden pagoda design.

The pagoda is similar to the Gyeongcheonsa Pagoda, which was made during the Goryeo Era and is now housed at the National Museum of Korea.

The Han River is a major river in South Korea and the fourth longest river on the Korean peninsula after the Amnok, Duman, and Nakdong rivers. It is formed by the confluence of the Namhan River (South Han River), which originates in Mount Daedeok, and the Bukhan River (North Han River), which originates on the slopes of Mount Geumgang in North Korea. The River flows through Seoul and then merges with the Imjin River shortly before it flows into the Yellow Sea. The two major branches of the river, the Namhan River and the Bukhan River, come together at Yangsu-ri, Gyeonggi-do province, at which point it is referred to as the Han River. It then passes through Seoul and continues on to the Yellow Sea (or West Sea to Koreans). Broad tidal flats can be found at the mouth of the Han River, where it meets the sea along the Korean Demilitarized Zone that divides South and North Korea.

The total length of the Han River (to include its tributaries the Namhan and Bukhan Rivers) is approximately 514 kilometres (319 mi).

Although it is not a long river, the lower Han is remarkably broad for such a relatively short river. Within Seoul city limits, the river is more than 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) wide. Prior to the construction of a number of major dams, the river was known for its huge coefficient of river regime (ratio between the maximum and minimum amount of flow) of 1:390. (For comparison, The Thames and the Rhine have coefficients of 1:8 and 1:18, respectively.)

The Han River and its surrounding area played an important role in Korean history. The Three Kingdoms of Korea strove to take control of this land, where the river was used as a trade route to China (via the Yellow Sea). However, the river is no longer actively used for navigation, because its estuary is located at the borders of the two Koreas, barred for entrance by any civilian.

There have been fears, such as the 1986 Water Panic in South Korea, that North Korea could attack Seoul by releasing a flood from the upstream dam.

Along the banks of the river, especially in Seoul, pedestrian walkways and bicycle paths are available on both sides of the river. Various restaurants and cafes are located on these paths. While most bridges crossing the Han are for motor vehicles or subways only, citizens may cross select bridges on foot or by bicycle.

Hence a visit was made!

It's the year of the Dragon again.. So are you a Dragon?! Well, cause I am! haha Although I'm born in the year of 1989, but I'm still a Dragon...Why? It is simply because my birthday falls 2 days before Chinese Year in year of 1989.... Hence, A Dragon I am! XD *proud sial*

What a name right? Well, it is a direct translation from the Cantonese's name....

This dish consist of quail eggs, bamboo shoots, scallops, sea cucumber, abalone, shark fin, chicken, Jinhua ham, pork tendon, ginseng, mushrooms, and taro....lots of ingredients right? lol

Mixed Vegetables with Noodles

Pretty simple dish...nicely done, the vegetables was crunchy though =)

Claypot Pork with bread

My favourite among all! haha...Although the pork was full with fats, as you can see a thick layer of fats, it's still awesome delicious....The pork was nicely done and tender..Flavour was perfect for me!

Grilled Fish with Vege

It seems like steamed fish right? but it's not....

Vegetables which I can't really remember the name.... =S sorry

Prawn with Oats

Initially I thought the pieces stuff around the the prawn must be one of the spices, but when I tried, it's actually oats...Somehow they coated the oats with a layer of something and fried together with the prawn which tastes awesome for me...

You must be wondering how does the name come about right? I was thinking, woah, such an unique name like really! But after some explanation by the boss (you might wanna know who is the boss as well later =P ) The name actually came about from a street name from Malacca itself.. They want to incorporate the whole idea of Malacca from Malacca itself to here...Hence they pick a street name from Malacca itself.

Pai Tee (Top Hats)

This is sort of a snacks I would say. It's basically a snacks with a Pai Tee (biscuit based) together with a mixture of vegetables. It something light, healthy and delicious I would say. Crunchy on the outside, and healthy on the inside...

Chicken Meatball Soup

Hands down to the Chicken Meatball Soup! Really! why? Simply because I'm never a soup person, I never finish my bowl soup whenever I'm served on...not even at home, not even at any restaurant.... But this soup was good...the taste was there, and you wouldn't feel thirsty after drinking it...I mean most restaurant their soups is fulled with addictive, hence the thirstiness...but this nah, it was nice...really nice...

Nyonya Chicken Curry

It reminds me of my grandma's cooking! haha...Well, it's really different the Curry Chicken compared to the curry chicken you usually have it... You really feel that the coconut milk level is slightly higher, and of course the spices of herbs and ingredients of the curry paste is different...It's quite unique I would say....the aroma was strong definitely and the chicken was tender as well...Nicely done!

Chap Chye (Nyonya Mixed Stir-Fried Vegetables)

Pretty normal dish to me...It's dish where they mix together all sorts of vegetables...hence the name =)

Sek Kay (Nyonya Stewed Chicken)

When this dish was served, I was like, woah what is this! I'm even more hungry looking at it now! haha...
This is a dish consists of hard-boiled egg, chicken feet, some tau-kua and chicken meat...
Pretty special dish I would say...Most of it was cooked solely based on soya sauce, but with some other ingredients as well... A dish where you can't complain for more!

Sotong Masak Lemak Nenas

Ok, I got to say this is good... The lemak and the gravy is just plain awesome...the paste was really nice, the lemak level was just nice as well....and when you have the gravy, you will ask literally ask for more! You can even eat it with white rice together with the gravy only! IT IS THAT GOOD!

Ikan Goreng Chili (Talapia)

Something special to me...the fish was cooked till super duper crispy... The spices on top was pretty decent too...It's like as if eating a snacks of crispy snacks rather than eating some fish...good for kids who don't like fish! =D

Sambal Bendi

It is spicy and pretty decent dish....Can order it anytime of the day for nice vegetables dish for sure =)

I was never a brinjal's fan...never like and I thought I never will...But after this dish, I kinda like brinjal..Somehow maybe it's the paste that they used, it is pretty nice...something unique yet different for me...

Asam stingray was the boom la! the asam is super duper nice...dunno how to explain also..haha just try it when you're there!

Cucur Udang

A dish where the prawn was fried together with a layer coated flour which turned up to become Cucur Udang! haha

After all the heavy meal, I'm sure you want to order some desserts as well right...

Sago Gula Melaka

Conclusion to all the desserts, they uses AUTHENTIC Gula Melaka...hence the desserts all are not too sweet but full with tastes instead! Perfect!

Getting Active to Help Save Animals

Recently, I volunteer myself to help out one of the charity project...Honestly speaking, I didn't know and did not see myself doing a charity..I mean I always have the intention of doing one, but there was never an action doing it....somehow when I heard about it, it just hit me, maybe I should do something to help out as well....

So walaa! I was the volunteer for the said event below, which is The Pet Project Malaysia 2012

It is pretty common where people refrain themselves to do charity work or going for charity because they think that they could not afford or so, so as well do not need to show out or do anything about it... Hence same goes to charity work for pets...people always have a negative thought about it.... But I think, as long as you have the intention to help, it is good enough for the cause...

The Pet Project Malaysia 2012

This event was held on 7th January, 2012 (11am to 11pm) at The British International School of Kuala Lumpur with the aims to raise funds and awareness through POSITIVE and PROACTIVE ways to create a platform for the public to learn more about the various animal welfare NGOs and the cause itself.

The Pet Project Malaysia 2012 is a 12-hour “Get Active” marathon comprised of dance, fitness and sports-based classes taught by internationally renowned presenters along with performances from Malaysia’s most promising young talents.

Aside from the Main Event (master classes and performances), participants could also visit sports carnival, playground, silent auction, rock climbing wall, rugby drills, a 2-hour workshop with Jojo Struys, self defense classes, animal welfare talks, football nutrition talks, face painting, Asia's largest football card montage, food & beverage stalls, sponsors & partners booths, merchandise booths and of course some NGO booths.

It was a total transparent event and all proceeds will be split to the smaller NGOs (such as Save a Stray, AnimalCare, Paws, H.O.P.E., SPCA Selangor, Independent Pet Rescuers, MDDB, KTAJ ( now known as SCRATCH) and Paws Mission) according to how many animals in their care and/or how much upgrading their facilities need.

This project aims to be the first of a long-term goal to secure funds for animal welfare… they were looking at making this a world-class, top-notch, yearly event.

If you fear that if you want to own one, you might need to hire someone who is good in designing to help you out with this.

But fear not! With PhotoTalkz, you do not need this people anymore yo!

All you need to do is, download the software, PhotoTalkz and get started with it!

So from there, it's pretty simple...just upload as many pictures as you file!

Looking for a decent, nice and yummy Italian restaurant? Yeah, I know it's pretty hard to find one in Malaysia, not easy at all....

However, somehow I came across about this cafe who serves quite decent Italian food...

This place is know as....

The interior of the place is pretty nice and cozy as well....

If you notice, they actually incorporated the colour of the Italian's flag into their decoration and what not...nicely done

oh, and I like the way the set up the table...

So we started the night of with some drinks...

I love the Sangria here...why? The wine tastes wasn't that strong, it did overpower the fruit taste at all...it's like drinking a fruit juice only to me... love it!

While waiting for our food to be served, we went and check out how was the pizza being made...quite interesting I would say...I mean maybe cause it's the first time me seeing people making a pizza live? yes i'm a jakun! thank you.. XD

It is know as Wood fired oven roasted pumpkin soup as well...As the name suggested, the pumpkin was roasted with wood fired oven...never really try any Pumpkin soup before, I would say this is my first trying a decent Pumpkin soup...the taste of the pumpkin was there definitely..But what i like about this soup is that it is creamy enough for my liking..

This is a homemade cream of mushroom soup... This is something really different...Mushroom soup lover or not, I think you should really try it...the reason is because the texture is so so different...Not only it is creamy enough, you can feel the bits of the mushroom in the soup, which I love it =)

Beef Lasagna

The lasagna was nicely done...the layer by layer of the lasagna was good...It was too sticky nor to dry...love it the way it is! just nice

This spaghetti is a mixed seafood in a hearty tomato sauce dish...When it was served, I was pretty impress by the amount of Seafood! they did not con us of course! haha...am a happy boy seeing it....haha

ANYWAYS, for me, it's really nice...why? because usually when I ordered a tomato based spaghetti, it's always too sweet the sauce they used...But for this, it wasn't sweet at all...the taste was just nice there with bits of herbs..and to make it even better, the fresh seafood just nail it for my tummy! XD

This dish consist of flat pasta with scallop, wild porcini and shitake mushroom in a cream sauce... I think the concern when people have while ordering a cream based sauce dish is that it might be too creamy...Yes, it is true that it tastes really good when it is creamy enough for a cream sauce dish...but it tense that get a bit too much for yourself when it is too creamy....

However, for this, in my opinion, it was good enough the creamy-ness which doesn't give too much for the creamy-ness...

Petto Di Manzo Con Vino Rosso

This is a wood fired oven roasted beef ribs in a reduction of red wine on a bed of mashed potato dish...simply nice for me! the beef was just nice... it wasn't overcooked...I'm sure you know if beef is overcooked it will be extremely hard to eat... But this just nice with the awesome taste...

My first time trying this....It's a smooth cream pudding with caramel sauce... It's something in between pudding and ice-cream for me...haha

Yee Sang to me is pretty much standard, but the Salmon makes the icing for the Yee Sang....Different taste altogether I would say. It simply gave an extra taste to it... try it!

Braised Assorted Dried Seafood Soup with Crab Meat

In another words it's call the Shark Fin Soup....it was not too bad, texture was there which I like it, because lots of restaurant who serves Shark Fin Soup, you can barely get to taste the texture of the shark fin, crab meats and all...not too bad for me..

Deep-Fried Chicken with Plum Sauce

Pretty interesting this dish I would say....Usually roasted chicken, it would be serves with some Sour Plum flour on the side...but for them, the chef decided to serve it with Plum Sauce instead...something definitely different for...surprisingly, the roasted chicken was still crispy even after the Plum Sauce was covered all over it. I wonder what's the secret...hmmm hmmm...

Deep-Friend Red Snapper Fish with Vinegar Sauce

The fish was really fresh I would say....Texture was nice.. It's quite a simple dish I would say, just a fried fish covered with Vinegar Sauce..simple and nice..

Baked Tiger Prawn with Chef Special Sauce

I like prawns as always.... The prawn was really fresh, texture was good....and it wasn't overcooked! Because usually if prawns is overcooked, the texture would be a bit hard and not as chewy...like this..!

Stir-Fried Vegetables with Almond Flakes

Super healthy dish I would say.... Vegetables was pretty crispy, i bet they served it to us once it was done prepared....

Clay Pot Rice with Preserved Meat

Never had Clay Pot Rice with Preserved meat before...usually it's either with chicken cooked together with eggs...that's all..haha
But this dish was not too bad for me, something different...just that it was a bit tad too oily for me...but I guess it gotta be oily so that the rice would not stick on the clay pot..

Chilled Sea Coconut with Longan and Lemon

Typical chinese cuisine dessert....nicely done and refreshing with the lemon as extra for the desserts...

Premiere Screening yo!

Thanks to nuffnang once again, although it's been a while since the last screening....

Anyways, Contraband (2012) is an American action thriller film directed by Baltasar Kormákur, starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale. Just so you know, the film is a remake of the Icelandic 2009 film Reykjavík-Rotterdam which Kormákur starred in.

For me, don't really like the story line...there wasn't any interesting scene or action...it was just one dull and slow movie for me...oh well...

As you know one the most important food for Chinese New Year will be the Yee Sang
Tropical Fruits Yee Sang

It is known and has been told that by having Yee Sang, it's to make sure you have a prosper and wealthy year ahead!
Everyone knows that Yee Sang usually either it tastes pretty sweet or a bit sour...But this Yee Sang is quite unique I would say. With the fruits all over, it sort of gave the Yee Sang a fresher feel and taste. You will actually feel pretty refreshing after eating it.

Braised Mini Shark's Fin with Sea Treasure in Butter Cream Superior Stock

Shark fin soup is always one of my favourite during a course dinner, BUT it is always a big disappointment for me, because it's either they are using not fresh shark fin, or fake shark fin, or lots of crab meats instead of shark fin, or it is just simply bad....
Surprisingly the chef did not disappoint me at all....The Shark Fin was reasonably a lot and super duper fresh..When you eat it, you can simply feel the fresh texture of the shark fin and of course the crab meat too...btw, they don't use crabsticks kinda meat, they use crab meat, pure crab meat from the crab, not processed ones.... *thumbs up for this*

Butter Prawn with Oatmeal

Before a dish of prawn is serve usually, I would be hoping, please peal of the shells of the prawn...this time my wish came true! haha
Oatmeal is never my favourite, but prawn is one of my favourite seafood... However Prawn and Oatmeal goes superbly well together...The icing was the butter taste, the butter simply give another taste and aroma to the prawn itself...

Steamed Fried Spring Chicken with Chinese Herbs and Sea Moss

Fear not, you must be thinking that this chicken which was made with Chinese herbs, it is gonna be tasteless but full with Chinese herbs kinda taste right? Well, it doesn't taste so.....
The chicken somehow it is full with flavours but not full with Chinese Herbs flavours mind u...somehow with the enough flavour, tenderness of the chicken, it was just a nice dish for me...

Wok Baked Sea Grouper Fish with "Lao Gan Ma" and Sichuan Chili Bean Paste

I think the fish was smiling when it was thrown into the wok to be cook! haha
The fish was cook with sweet and sour, and some spicy-ness was added in it as well..Don't worry about the spicy level, it is pretty mild..I think it is because the sweet and sour has overpowered the spicy level, so it is at the perfect level of spicy-sweet-sour...

Fried Rice with Seafood and Pumpkin

Ok, never thought of having fried rice with Pumpkin before, like never!
You must be wondering how does it tastes like right? What I do not like about fried rice usually is, it will make you felt super duper full because of the oily-ness of the rice...
However for this, I think the Pumpkin makes way off the oily-ness of the fried rice...It actually tastes pretty refreshing after eating it...and my tummy was sort of demanding for more! haha

Yes it has finally come to Malaysia

You must be wondering right, what is the Bears standing in front of Pavilion all about? The first thing hit me was, don't tell me KL wanna be like Liverpool where they have Penguins all over the city!

But after reading one descriptions board, I was wronggg....damn! haha

Anyways, all this bears are called the United Buddy Bears.

The Buddy Bears are a series of painted, life-size fibreglass bear sculptures originally developed in Berlin, Germany. The first Buddy Bear was created by the German business people Klaus and Eva Herlitz, in cooperation with the sculptor Roman Strobl in 2001.

The two concepts Buddy Bear and United Buddy Bears stand for two very different types of activity. The Buddy Bears are an urban event, comparable to other events with a great diversity of animal sculptures that bring new life into many city centres. The United Buddy Bears, however, are primarily about their message - a message of peace, international understanding and tolerance among the nations, cultures and religions of this world.

The United Buddy Bears are an international art exhibition with more than 140 two metre tall fibreglass bears. Under the motto: We have to get to know each other better, it makes us understand one another better, trust each other more, and live together more peacefully more than 140 countries acknowledged by the United Nations are represented, promoting tolerance, international understanding and the great concept of different nations and cultures living in peace and harmony.

The bears stand hand in hand in a peaceful circle.

One important prerequisite for this international unifying project is to choose artists from the individual countries - for the circle to reflect the diversity of the cultures of one world. The observer learns about the culture, the history, the people and the landscape of the individual countries - large or small. Thanks to AirAsia, gotten the chance to catch Magic Mirror The Musical at Istana Budaya.

Overall, I think the Musical carries a very good moral story.

Synopsis:

In the Western Pure Land of Great Bliss, the embodiment of all the Buddha's compassion, Guan-yin (Skt. Avalokitesvara) is entertained by the singing and dancing of her attending goddesses, but her heart, however, is perturbed. She is contemplating the welfare of beings and upon hearing their laments...

On earth, a war is raging. Under the influence of demons, a cruel general is, along with his henchmen, destroying all who oppose him. In the battles, homes, families, and loved ones are all been destroyed, causing immense suffering. In the midst of this turmoil, Guan-yin manifests in the guise of a majestic and awesome, wise old man. He fearlessly guides the righteous soldiers in their defeat and ultimately overthrown the cruel general and his men, sending them scattering under the darkness of night. The righteous soldiers are dissuaded from following and slaughtering through the intervention of The Wise Old Man who counsels them in forgiveness and compassion.

In a simple village of idyllic lifestyles, however, due the influence of the cruel general and his henchmen, who are now living as outcasts, bandits, and thieves, the villagers become subject to robbery, abuse, and thievery. They now live in constant fear and anxiety. Some villagers, due to the temptation and lure of the evil force, resort to alcohol and become drunks, and join the disposed cruel general in their vice.

Guan-yin decides to help the situation by teaching the villagers and bandits about love, compassion, patience, tolerance and concern. She manifests herself as a lady dressed in white clothes and appears in the market place trying to sell a small copper mirror for a very high price. Everyone, villagers and bandits alike, are surprised at the price she is asking for such a small trinket, and they gather around her trying to glimpse it. When nobody comes forward to buy the mirror, she offers to let people look into it for a small fee. Curiosity getting the better of him, a henchman approaches and demands to look at the mirror.

The lady in white agrees, and for a small fee he may look into the mirror; which he does. Horrified, he turns away from it and urges the other to look into the mirror. Slowly the rest of the people approach; taking turns, they look into the mirror. This is a magic mirror which allows you to see your past karma and its future result. Those who have performed good deeds see a beautiful future, those who have done negative ones see the horrors that will inevitably befall them, and those who have done bath good and bad see a mixed future. As such, some leave the mirror viewing happy, some with a mixture of happiness and concern, and some leave clutching their chests with an anxiety. After some time, the lady in white decides to move on; but just before she departs, the cruel general arrives. He ridicules the lady in white and her magic mirror and proceeds to strike her, whilst those who have found trust and solace in the lady move the protect her. In the ensuing scuffle, a young girl dies protecting her father. Seeing this sacrifice, the demons and the humans put an end to their turmoil. The lady in white, holding the girl's body, disappears. At the place of her disappearance, some see a peaceful face, others a semi-wrathful face, and others still a ferocious face. It slowly dawns on the assembled people that the lady in white was none other than Guan Yin, appearing through her great compassion in order to help and heal and heal the people of the village.
