Local Film "Bunohan" stalks on OSCAR

Dain Said’s critically acclaimed film BUNOHAN is Malaysia’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 85th Academy Awards next year.

The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), an agency under the Ministry of Information, Communications & Culture Malaysia, has selected the award winning film Bunohan to represent Malaysia in the next instalment of the Oscar race.  A record breaking 71 countries have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category this year. Malaysia has only ever submitted one film prior to this – Puteri Gunung Ledang in 2004.

“Although we have not been submitting films to the Oscars for sometime, this year we are particularly proud to have a film worthy of the selection based on the critical acclaim that it has garnered both locally and internationally as well as having a solid record of screenings at Oscar-qualifying festivals,” explained Naguib Razak, the Director General of FINAS.

Bunohan had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2011, followed by regional premieres at other reputable film festivals such as Rotterdam and Taipei. In the United States, Bunohan was screened at several Oscar-qualifying festivals, including in Los Angeles, Palm Springs and Seattle.  It was released theatrically in Malaysia in March 2012 to rave critical reviews and more than held its own against mainstream genre films.

Since its world premiere in Toronto, the film has secured major sales & distribution deals internationally, with international sales being handled by Easternlight Films, and Traction Media handling sales in the US.

Bunohan is distributed in UK, French, German, Benelux & Australian territories by Universal Pictures, while its US distributor, Oscilloscope Pictures is planning a 2013 release.

This submission is not just a matter of declaring Malaysia’s best candidate, but rather an acknowledgement of this Malaysian film’s significant international accomplishment and international release potential,” added Naguib.

The film’s writer-director Dain Iskandar Said was very humbled when notified, and is relieved that Bunohan satisfied the Academy’s submission requirements. The producer, Nandita Solomon is grateful for the national recognition bestowed on Bunohan, Dain’s first feature to meet audiences. She added that this happy news comes together with the nomination for Achievement in Cinematography for Bunohan’s director of photography, Jarin Pengpanich at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Australia. Both Nandita and Dain are currently pitching Apparat’s next feature film project Interchange in the Asian Project Market at the Busan International Film Festival in Korea.

Bunohan’s entry for the Oscar is timely in light of the rapid and strong growth of the Malaysian film industry in recent years. The emergence of Malaysian feature filmmakers like Dain who are generating films strong enough to compete in the international market continues the success of Malaysian animation and documentaries that have been penetrating the international markets in recent years.

Naguib adds, “Bunohan’s success is important in conveying the right message to young filmmakers to break new ground, to constantly challenge themselves with content that connect and has resonance with its audience.”

Bunohan, written and directed by Dain Iskandar Said, tells the tragic story of three estranged brothers - a kickboxer, a businessman and an assassin who return to their hometown, Bunohan, where their fates intertwine with dark consequences. It stars Faizal Hussein, Zahiril Adzim and Pekin Ibrahim, supported by Bront Palarae, Sofi Jikan, Nam Ron, Wan Hanafi Su, Amerul Affendi and Tengku Azura among others. It is produced by Nandita Solomon of Apparat and co-produced by Tim Kwok of LA-based Convergence Entertainment who will be spearheading the promotional campaign in the lead up to the nominations.

Now that the final list of submissions has been officially announced, the Academy will begin its process of viewing and voting. From these 71 submissions, 9 will be shortlisted, before the final five nominees will be announced by the Academy on 10 January 2013. The 85th Academy Awards will be held on 24 February 2013.

Rémy Martin Centaur Dance Showdown 2012

The search for Asia’s Best Dance Crew is on!
Rémy Martin Centaur Dance Showdown 2012
to make its debut in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, 17 October 2012 – Rémy Martin, the ‘Heart of Cognac’, has embarked on a search for the region’s best dance crew with its Centaur Dance Showdown making its way to Malaysia for the first time.

The competition is set to find the greatest dance talent across 6 countries; namely Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and India in a series of preliminary rounds that will be the battlegrounds for ardent dance crews in their pursuit of fame and recognition of their talent. Following the success of the inaugural competition held in Vietnam last year, Rémy Martin was inspired to extend the competition regionally, discovering the most outstanding dance groups in each of the 6 countries before holding the final round of the Centaur Dance Showdown in Singapore next January 2013.

We are delighted to provide these gifted performers with the platform from which they may showcase their passion, creativity, refined skills and undeniable talent to both a national and international audience. For the first time in Malaysia, the Rémy Martin Centaur Dance Showdown will give these dancers the opportunity to demonstrate their artistry and finesse in choreographed routines, competing against the region’s finest urban street dancers for the title of Asia’s Best Dance Crew,” said Mr. Laurent Soulat, Regional Marketing Manager for South East Asia, Middle East & India, Rémy Cointreau International.

Rémy Martin is known for being a cognac brand that epitomises vitality and superior quality. These are two attributes which can also be found in the dance groups competing in the Centaur Dance Showdown,” he added.

If you have dedicated yourself to the art of dance or have simply been inspired by the latest Step Up movie, this regional competition will provide you with the perfect opportunity to put your moves to good use!

Each team consists of 5 people, with all members aged 18 years or above and of Malaysian nationality (non-Muslim), and must complete the official Rémy Martin Centaur Dance Showdown registration form online (http://my.centaurdance.com/register) and submit their dance video (3 minutes or less) online (http://my.centaurdance.com/video_upload/) by no later than 11 November 2012.

The videos will then be featured online from 1 to 20 November 2012, where fans can vote for their favourite dance crews. On the panel for the Malaysian finals are Joel Tan (accredited dance instructor and founder of Urban Groove Dance Network who pioneered the original street and urban dance styles in Malaysia), Maple Loo (experienced dancer, choreographer and judge on 8TV’s own dance competition Showdown) and Patricia Knudsen (a seasoned performer, model, host and DJ of mixed Danish and Malaysian Chinese parentage. She is a winner of numerous dance awards and has many accolades to her name).

The top 10 crews with the highest scores and public votes will compete before the judges in the Rémy Martin Centaur Dance Showdown Malaysia Finals at Sunway Giza on 30 November 2012. The champion will be chosen based on criteria such as overall performance, creativity, showmanship and stage presence, synchronization and execution and musicality, and will go on to represent Malaysia in the International Finals in Singapore on 18 January 2013.

The winning Malaysian team will not only have the honour of representing Malaysia in the International Finals in Singapore but will also take away RM10,000. First and second runners up won’t walk away empty-handed; receiving RM6,000 and RM3,000 respectively.

Rémy Martin’s brand ambassador and international superstar, Jolin Tsai, is set to grace the International Finals; lending her experience as a dancer and taking a seat at the judging panel. As an additional treat for the expected 1,000 invited guests and audience members, Jolin will hold a mini-concert; entertaining the crowd with some of her greatest hits.

A grand prize of USD$10,000 awaits the winner of the International Rémy Martin Centaur Dance Showdown who will also walk away with the title of Asia’s Best Dance Crew!
